How to Play Shells & Feathers

Tic-Tac-Toe

Goal

Get three of your pieces in a row: across, down or diagonally.

Taking turns

  • Players take turns placing one piece on an empty square.
  • Player 1 always moves first. Choose whether Player 1 plays shells or feathers before the game.
  • If all nine squares fill up with no row of three, the game is a draw.

Against the Spirit

  • You are Player 1 and the forest Spirit answers each move.
  • Gentle picks open squares at random. Balanced plays its best move about 7 times in 10. Wise never loses, so a draw is a great result.

Two players

Share one device and take turns. The turn line above the board shows whose move it is.

Menu

Menu, above the board, pauses the game and holds Restart, Change Mode and All Games.

Keyboard

Tab to the board, move between squares with the arrow keys, and press Enter or Space to place a piece.

Use the arrow keys to move between the dark squares. Press Enter or Space on a piece to pick it up, then on the square it should move to. Escape puts the piece back.

Last move

Rules and keys
  • Move one square diagonally forward onto an empty dark square. Jump an enemy piece to capture it.
  • Captures are compulsory, and a jump that can go on must.
  • A piece reaching the far row is crowned: kings move and jump both ways.
  • Win by capturing every enemy piece or leaving them no move.
  • Fog of War: you see your own pieces and only the enemy pieces next to them.
  • Arrow keys move between dark squares; Enter or Space picks up a piece and moves it; Esc puts it back.

How to Play Acorns & Leaves

Checkers

Classic checkers (draughts): one side plays acorns, the other leaves.

Starting position: 12 pieces each on the dark squares, Acorns at the bottom.
  • Acorn
  • Acorn king
  • Leaf
  • Leaf king

Goal

Capture every piece on the other side, or leave it with no move.

Moves

  • Acorns move first. A piece moves one square diagonally forward, on the dark squares.
  • To capture, jump an opponent's piece to the empty square just beyond it. Ordinary pieces capture forward only.
  • Capturing is compulsory, but you choose which capture. A piece that can jump again keeps jumping.

Kings

Reach the far row to be crowned (crown and gold ring). Kings move and capture backward too. Being crowned ends the move.

Draw

40 moves each with no capture and no ordinary piece moved.

On the board

  • Tap a piece, then a marked square: a dot is a move, a ring is a jump. In a chain, tap each landing square. No dragging needed.
  • Tap the piece again (or another of yours) to put it back before it moves.
  • An orange ring marks pieces that must capture.
  • Menu pauses the game and holds Restart, Change Mode and All Games.
  • Keyboard: arrow keys move between dark squares, Enter or Space picks, Escape puts the piece back.

Against the Spirit

Pick your side and Gentle, Balanced or Wise. Your pieces start at the bottom. Gentle looks one move ahead and can miss a trap; Balanced looks three moves ahead; Wise looks as far ahead as a moment allows and always plays its best move. In Fog of War the Spirit sees only what you would, and guesses at the rest.

Fog of War

  • You see your own pieces, and enemy pieces only on squares next to them. Other dark squares are misty: they may hide an enemy piece.
  • The real board decides what is legal, as in Classic. If a capture may be possible, you must try one; if a hidden piece blocks the landing square, it is shown to you and you choose again.
  • With two players, a handoff screen hides the board between turns. The fog lifts when the game ends.

“Against the Spirit” counts only your own games against the Spirit; games for two players on this device have their own entries and never count as anyone’s win. Achievements are unlocked once, from what really happened: nothing is guessed from older totals. Clearing a game’s progress in Your Path locks its achievements again, with the Collection entries that need them.
